Pincus did not stay. But he did not go, either. It felt intrusive for him to remain in the room while She coaxed the dying woman off to a better place, a concept that Pincus refused to relinquish even in the face of Her startling pronouncement that there was, in fact, no better (or worse) place. Pincus would not accept that this place, these cold stone steps on which Pincus now sat waiting for Her reappearance, looking out at the flowering beds of marigolds that lined the driveway and the evergreen trees in the distance, that this was it. After this, there was nothing.

Now the reader should be advised that, because of the large number of individuals involved, coupled with the haphazard journal entries kept by Pincus as his attention turned elsewhere, elsewhere being almost exclusively toward Her, it is impossible to determine with any accuracy the time frame during which the events that follow unfolded.

However, based on references found in various documents of the time, it is reasonable to assume that they occurred over a period of years, as opposed to weeks or months. And these years were, the historical record confirms, not without a certain initiative shown by those elsewhere on the globe, especially those who held passionate beliefs contrary to those who passionately believed otherwise — the Soviets and the Afghans, the Iraqis and the Iranians, the Muslims and anti-Muslims, the Islamists and the Christians, and the Serbs and Croatians. Those who felt that the wars raging between these factions were insufficient expressions of their discontent showed even more initiative. The Rome and Vienna airports were attacked, the barracks in Beirut were bombed, the Soviets shot down Korean Airlines Flight 007, Pan Am Flight 103 was blown up, and Anwar Sadat, Indira Gandhi, and Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme were assassinated. It was during this same time that, to make absolutely certain that CNN did not run dry of material to air during its 24-hour news cycle, the NASA Space Shuttle Challenger disintegrated 73 seconds after launch, and when this event had exhausted its newsworthiness six months later, there was a nuclear meltdown in Chernobyl. The decade ended with the crushing of the protests of Tiananmen Square, and while the future looked bleak if the past was any indicator, there were compensations that arrived on the scene during this same decade that provided a means to cope — Pac-Man and the Boombox.

To be sure, this was not the primary subject on the mind of Pincus. Having met Her, there was now a great deal to process. She was not at all what he had expected. She was no doubt beautiful, but her beauty was not the kind that could easily be categorized. She did not have the looks or stature of a fashion model, nor the appearance of the sort of classic beauty one might find in a Botticelli painting, nor did She have the visual attraction and sexuality of a film star, although in some way
